What to do the moment your loved one has passed
During this tender time, practical matters still need care and compassion. These steps can help.
- 1Inform family and friendsReach out to close family and friends to gently share the news.
- 2Notify healthcare providersIf your loved one was receiving care, let their providers know so they can assist with arrangements.
- 3Contact the relevant authoritiesDepending on the circumstances, emergency services or the police may need to be notified.
- 4Gather important documentsIdentification (needed for the death certificate), insurance policies and legal papers.
- 5Request medical recordsApply at the hospital; an application fee may apply and processing usually takes 2–3 weeks.
